The old dog’s still got it
Deco came off the bench yesterday to set up one goal and score another as Fluminense came from behind to beat Mexican club América by 3 goals to 2 in the Copa Libertadores. You can watch the highlights below, though feel free to skip ahead a couple of minutes as the first section of the clip is devoted to seemingly endless replays of the first goal.
I probably ought to change my title, as a quick check of his Wikipedia page reveals that Deco isn’t quite as far over the hill as I’d thought. You fancy a certain certain West London club might have found a use for his services this season. It’s tempting to imagine Deco squeezing himself into the Frank Lampard-shaped hole that emerged in Chelsea’s midfield earlier this season, and his clever eye for a pass would perhaps have made better use of winter signing Fernando Torres’s runs, but I don’t imagine that Deco is shedding any tears. Oh, and see if you can spot the flick-on by former Lyon and Brazil forward Fred, who, it turns out, is Fluminense’s captain. I wonder how he’s been doing since his return to Brazilian football. He’s only 27, but I fear his chance at glory in his national colours may already have come and gone. I’ll be looking forward to Mario Menezes’s announcement of his Copa América squad. Fred’s chances of getting in might be very remote, but they are at least infinitely better than his compatriot Deco’s!
